Trust is a powerful facilitator of transformative change. Our ability to trust, recognize bias and tap into our emotional intelligence affects our decision making and relationships and impacts our performance, how we lead others and how we value ourselves.
On December 10, the OHA invites you to join a conversation with leading global authorities in the fields of emotional intelligence and organizational trust. Health care leaders from across the sector will convene for a discussion on trust and the role we all play as leaders within organizations and across our integrated system of care. Together, we will reflect upon our own awareness of self and how we hear, interpret, understand and empathize with each other. We will also explore the importance of collaboration and trust in these times of system integration and examine how we build, destroy, influence and repair trust.
The day starts with a conversation with Dr. Marc Brackett, Director at the Yale Centre for Emotional Intelligence and Professor in the Child Study Centre at Yale University. Dr. Brackett will demonstrate why what we do with our emotions matter and help explore how emotions inform leadership thinking, decision-making processes, the quality of relationships, and physical and mental well-being. Building on this foundational knowledge and understanding of our own self-awareness Professor Nicole Gillespie, KPMG Chair in Organizational Trust and Professor of Management at University of Queensland, will spend the afternoon drawing on the science of trust to explore what trust is, why it matters, and the key principles and practices for building and preserving trust during periods of disruptive change. The day will close with a candid conversation with Canada's former Governor General, His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, who will share insights on trust drawn from his time in public service including stories from his recent book Trust.
The program will also explore research done in the areas of emotional intelligence, staff engagement, organizational well-bring and physician engagement.
- Andrea Hoban, co-founder and head of learning at OJI Life Lab, San Francisco, will talk about emotional intelligence for teams and for one's personal growth. Andrea will demonstrate how the ground-breaking work on emotional intelligence presented earlier in the morning becomes applied through a next generation of mobile learning.
- Five diverse Ontario hospitals are participating in a piece of original research led by the Yale Centre for Emotional Intelligence, to better understand staff engagement, staff well-being and organizational wellness. The aggregated, generic and de-identified findings will benefit hospitals across the province and enhance the sector's understanding of emotional health of all staff. We will hear from four hospital leaders about the research they have chosen to embark on, and why.
- How do you define physician engagement? While the concept of physician engagement is important to every hospital, the term itself is overused and misunderstood. Prof. Tyrone Perreira and OHA Director Melissa Prokopy will share insight into the progress of their study to effectively measure baseline data on physician well-being and engagement province-wide.
