At London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC), care is delivered one meaningful interaction at a time. These moments are where great care flourishes through the positive impact of LHSC’s staff, physicians, volunteers, learners, and patient partners. Recognizing the importance of celebrating these contributions, LHSC introduced Great Moments, a recognition program that highlights the outstanding efforts of team members across the organization.
Great Moments makes it simple for patients, families, and colleagues to acknowledge acts of care, collaboration, and innovation across the organization. Anyone can submit a note of thanks, gratitude, or appreciation through a simple webform available on LHSC’s website. The program ensures that the impacts of these actions are not only noticed but formally recognized. With generous support from London Health Sciences Foundation and Children’s Health Foundation, each team member recognized receives a personalized letter of appreciation from LHSC’s Supervisor, David Musyj, along with a small token of gratitude. Additionally, each person is entered into a monthly draw for a small prize. This acknowledgement reinforces that every contribution – no matter the size – plays a vital role in strengthening the organization.
For Musyj, the program represents more than expressions of thanks; it is part of a broader effort to foster a workplace culture where gratitude is shared openly and regularly.
“Every day, Team LHSC goes above and beyond to care for the community and support one another,” said Musyj. “I am always so proud to hear of the ways our team is positively impacting patients, families, the community and each other. Great Moments is one of the ways we are working to build a strong culture of appreciation at LHSC, reminding Team LHSC that what they do each day matters.”
In its first year, Great Moments has received over 1,500 submissions resulting in over 2,300 members of Team LHSC being recognized. Patients have shared meaningful care experiences, families have expressed gratitude, and colleagues have highlighted the ways their peers exemplify LHSC’s values.
The People Behind the Moment
Behind every Great Moment is someone at LHSC who chose to make a difference. Whether through exceptional teamwork, compassionate care, innovative thinking, or supportive leadership, these individuals are shaping the experience of LHSC’s patients and colleagues in ways that resonate long after the moment has passed.
LHSC Security Guard, Roger Meddaoui, is one team member who was recognized through the Great Moments program. Roger was recognized for going above and beyond to help a family locate their lost items.
“I recently had an appointment in B tower with my son who has special needs. Prior to our appointment we had stopped to buy a video game and McDonald’s, so he had them with him for the appointment. Once we got home, my son realized that his bag with his items wasn’t with him and became sad. I immediately called the hospital and asked about a lost and found and was directed to the Security Dispatch Centre.”
“At that time, I spoke to a gentleman named Roger who was helpful right from the start of our conversation. I told him about my son and how much these things meant to him, and he said he was going to do all he could to help find the bag. About 15 minutes later I got a call from Roger saying the bag had been found! We are grateful that we had the opportunity to deal with Roger – he was so much help to us. He truly put a smile on my son’s face. Definitely a 10/10 moment for Roger in Security with his skill, compassion and professionalism!”
Another Great Moment recipient is Julie Dowler, LHSC Registered Nurse. Julie was recognized by a patient who she cared for through almost two decades of cancer treatment.
“As a four-time cancer survivor, Julie took care of me in 2007-2008 as a teenager and again from 2016-2023 as an adult in oncology. Julie used to rent movies for us from Blockbuster and set me up when I got bored of the inpatient movies (this was back before Netflix and streaming). She was a steady force for my family and upon my relapse as an adult, she was there again. Having a familiar face almost a decade later meant more to me than anything. I struggled with anxiety, and she was there to support me. Julie is not only a special person and a terrific nurse but is a truly outstanding member of our community and I couldn’t have gotten through without her. She has changed my life, and I truly couldn’t have done this without her. I’ll never be able to put in words what it’s meant to me to have you there by my side for almost two decades. Thank you, Julie.”
These Great Moments are just a glimpse at the countless ways Team LHSC goes above and beyond every day. Through programs like Great Moments, the dedication and commitment to care of LHSC staff, physician, learners, volunteers, and patient partners is celebrated and remembered. From Rob’s compassionate support to Roger’s inspiring dedication, each contribution is a reminder that every action shapes the patient and team experience.
