Regional Nephrology Program Named Top Performer in Ontario

Scarborough Health Network (SHN)'s Regional Nephrology Program is the largest regional kidney disease program in Ontario, providing dedicated and compassionate care to thousands of patients each year. Through this dedication, the Ontario Renal Network (ORN) has recognized SHN for outstanding performance and excellence in kidney care and hemodialysis.

For the year of 2024-2025, SHN achieved:

  • Top Performance on vascular access wait time, which measures the percentage of semi-urgent surgeries completed to give patients a dialysis port (an opening in the body that connects to a dialysis machine to clean a person's blood). We attained a perfect 100% rate for the year of 2024-2025 — the highest in Ontario;
  • Meeting the annual target on the Deferred Dialysis performance indicator with a rate of 92.9%.
​“This achievement reflects our unwavering commitment to delivering high-quality, timely, and patient-centred care for individuals living with kidney disease," said Ethel Macatangay, Director of Nephrology at SHN and Toronto Regional Director at ORN. “I'm proud of our teams for being recognized for the timely, evidence-based care they provide to a community that needs it."

This past year, ORN launched the Ontario Renal Plan (ORP) and the first-ever Kidney Transplant System Plan, which are important provincial roadmaps for advancing kidney care. SHN's Regional Nephrology Program played a key role in shaping these plans, helping to build a more integrated, equitable, and high-performing kidney care system for all Ontarians.

“Thanks to the work of doctors, nurses, technologists, social workers, dietitians, and all other nephrology staff, SHN is able to lead the way in the province for renal care," shared Dr. Tabo Sikaneta, Staff Nephrologist at SHN and Toronto Regional Medical Lead at ORN. “With their support, we're able to innovate and continue to shape the standard for kidney care in Ontario."
