As part of its ongoing commitment to providing innovative health care delivered with compassion, William Osler Health System (Osler) recently adopted two surgical technological innovations – Intellijoint HIP and MOLLI2 Surgical – two Canadian technological advancements that will help improve patient experience and outcomes, and enhance process efficiencies.

IntelliJoint HIP

Through a partnership with Intellijoint Surgical, Osler implemented Intellijoint HIP, an innovative made-in-Ontario technology used for total hip arthroplasty (THA) surgical procedures at its Brampton Civic Hospital. With the first procedure successfully completed in June 2024, this technology is used to help ensure the most accurate prosthesis placement for patients – this reduces post-surgery complications, aids in recovery and improves surgical efficiency across the organization.

Using the technology to improve accuracy is clinically proven to help reduce leg length discrepancies, hip dislocations, and revision surgeries post-operatively. It also eliminates the need to use intra-operative x-ray to determine the ideal placement of the implant, ultimately reducing the time of the surgery and optimizing patient well-being and hospital resources.

“We are thrilled to have introduced Intellijoint HIP into our surgery practice for total hip arthroplasty," said Dr. Roberta Minna, Chief of Surgery and Co-Medical Director, Surgical Services at William Osler Health System. “By harnessing the power of technology alongside the skill of the Osler team, Intellijoint HIP empowers our surgeons to be as accurate and efficient as possible, leading to better patient experiences and hospital outcomes."

MOLLI® 2 System

With the number of cancer cases in its community expected to double over the next 20 years, Osler partnered with MOLLI Surgical to introduce the award-winning MOLLI® 2 System to revolutionize breast cancer surgery for patients. This collaboration enhances the care experience for patients requiring surgery as part of their treatment plan and improves the surgical precision for breast cancer surgeons.

MOLLI Surgical's technology is an innovative wire-free and radiation-free technology that targets breast abnormality and marks the location of a lesion precisely, for removal during surgery. This home-grown Canadian technology is considerably less invasive for patients and more accurate when compared to wire-guided insertion into a patient's tissue on the day of surgery. As an added benefit for the community, by using the MOLLI® 2 System, Osler's team can schedule more breast cancer removal surgeries in a day, increasing efficiencies across the organization.

“By completing the localization of the abnormal breast tissue separately, and up to a month in advance of the surgery, Osler's care teams can optimize their workflows to create an elevated experience for patients and clinicians," said Dr. Roberta Minna, Chief of Surgery and Co-Medical Director, Surgical Services, William Osler Health System.

The MOLLI 2 System offers unmatched precision in marking the location of lesions eliminating the need for invasive wire-guided localization procedures. The technology features a market-leading innovation – real-time 3D guidance – with millimeter precision.

Building on the success of these surgical implementations and in line with its Value of “Innovation", Osler continues to look for opportunities to adopt and advance new technologies for its patients and their families. Partnerships with trailblazing technology companies like Intellijoint Surgical and MOLLI Surgical encourage a dynamic environment of continuous growth within Osler's hospitals, and encourage teams to continue to strive for the forefront of patient-inspired health care innovation.
