Dr. Bernard Leduc, president and Chief Executive Officer of Hôpital Montfort.
It was late March when Dr. Leduc, CEO of Hôpital Montfort, first met over the phone with Professor Anis’s team from University of Ottawa's Faculty of Engineering (UO) to explore the possibility of a collaboration. They then agreed that UO would develop prototype visors that Montfort would evaluate. Montfort then approached the Institut du Savoir Montfort (ISM) to help collaborate on this important project.
Throughout the week, all parties worked hard to help develop a reusable visor prototype that would go a long way to solving the shortage of this type of equipment’s procurement.
At this time all the usual precautions are being taken, and verifications are being carried out with the competent authorities to ensure a complete safeguard of the hospital’s resources, and to obtain an adequate certification. Montfort is evaluating the possibility of filing a request, in collaboration with The U of O team, to Health Canada. Montfort is also assessing the possibilities with their research ethics board, to move forward with the production of the visors.

Within a few days, Montfort should be in a good position to start producing large quantities of these protective visors. Their goal is to have enough visors to eventually equip all of their hospital staff, and that the majority of the visors could be reused after following a proper disinfection.
However, unless certified, Dr Leduc believes that this will remain an option at the point in which Montfort runs out of it’s certified stock, but they are still exploring this.
Montfort, ISM and The U of O engineering Faculty teams, are very excited with this collaboration.
