Dr. Melika Loriamini, Clinical Practice Leader (CPL) in the Laboratory Medicine Department, is among the many women who are at the forefront of innovation, leadership, and patient care at Humber River Health.

At Humber River Health (Humber), women are at the forefront of innovation, leadership, and patient care, making up over 77 per cent of the organization's staff. From the operating room to the laboratory, the frontline to executive leadership, they are the driving force behind Humber's success. In celebration of International Women's Day, Humber recognizes and celebrates the contributions of women across the organization, including those in laboratory medicine, an essential yet often behind-the-scenes department.

One such leader is Dr. Melika Loriamini, Clinical Practice Leader (CPL) in the Laboratory Medicine Department, who joined Humber in April 2024. Melika plays a critical role in ensuring the quality and efficiency of laboratory services, which are fundamental to patient care. Laboratory professionals provide the diagnostic insights that allow physicians to make informed treatment decisions, making their work a vital component of the health care system.

As a CPL, Melika's responsibilities include actively managing patient care, implementing evidence-based practices, mentoring laboratory staff, and ensuring patient safety. She also focuses on quality improvement and clinical education, helping to train new staff while staying up-to-date with the latest advancements in clinical research.

Melika's journey into health care was shaped by a passion for science that began in her early years, despite not having family members in the field. She pursued her education in biological sciences, eventually working as a medical laboratory technologist (MLT) while continuing her studies. Her dedication led her to complete a PhD in Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology at the University of Toronto, where she was mentored by Dr. Donald Branch, a leading scientist in transfusion medicine. “I was inspired by his journey, from being an MLT to becoming a scientist," says Melika. “I thought, if he could do it, then I probably can too."

Like many women in health care, Melika has faced unique challenges in balancing her professional ambitions with personal responsibilities. As an immigrant to Canada, a married woman, and a student pursuing advanced education, she navigated significant obstacles. “There is an expectation to take care of family responsibilities while also excelling professionally," notes Melika. However, with strong support from her husband and a deep commitment to her career, she persevered. She credits her success to resilience and encouragement, particularly during the demanding years of her PhD, when long hours in the lab and at the hospital tested her resolve.

The Laboratory Medicine Department at Humber is a reflection of the broader health care workforce, with the majority of its members being women. Melika takes great pride in the dedication and strength of her colleagues. “Many of them are balancing multiple roles, some as single mothers, yet they continue to manage the lab with excellence," says Melika. “I am truly proud of them."

When asked how health care organizations can better support women in leadership, Melika emphasized the importance of creating systems that foster growth and provide necessary resources. “Women are proven to be exceptional leaders. We excel at advancing organizational goals and multitasking. Thankfully, Humber provides support, resources, and education to help us succeed," explains Melika. For young women considering a career in health care, particularly in laboratory medicine, Melika advises them to explore the field through shadowing and hands-on experience. “Working in the lab requires passion, it's important to love what you do because it can be demanding," says Melika.

Beyond their clinical and technical expertise, the women of Humber River Health are also champions of innovation, continuously finding new ways to enhance patient care and streamline health care delivery. Whether it is integrating new technologies, leading quality improvement initiatives, or mentoring the next generation of health care professionals, their contributions extend far beyond their daily roles. Their leadership ensures that Humber remains at the cutting edge of modern health care, demonstrating that when women are empowered, entire communities benefit.

Humber River Health continues to be a leader in fostering an inclusive and supportive environment where women can thrive. As part of its commitment to equity and innovation, the organization ensures that women have the opportunities, mentorship, and resources they need to succeed in every department. This International Women's Day, Humber celebrates the contributions of women like Melika, whose dedication and expertise are curing health care.
