Exciting Milestone Reached in New Peel Memorial Hospital Project

Excitement is building as Brampton's new Peel Memorial Hospital moves closer to reality with the release of the Request for Qualifications (RFQ). This spring, the Ontario government and William Osler Health System (Osler) launched the first phase in selecting a team to bring this monumental project to life. The upcoming multi-storey patient tower promises to revolutionize health care in the region, featuring state-of-the-art inpatient beds, expanded clinics, and Brampton's eagerly anticipated second emergency department.

“Moving into the procurement stage brings us closer to a strong, more accessible health system for our communities' future," said Dr. Frank Martino, President and CEO, William Osler Health System. “The transformation of Peel Memorial into Brampton's new hospital will bring specialized and expanded services that are vital for patients and their families. We look forward to working with our partners in the time ahead to help increase hospital and health care capacity to serve our growing community."

The Honourable Sylvia Jones, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health, concurs. “As Peel Region continues to rapidly grow, the new Peel Memorial Hospital will be able to connect even more people to faster, more convenient care closer to home, for years to come."

“This milestone is another important step towards delivering improvements to health care capacity in Brampton," said Hon. Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation and MPP, Brampton South. “The new Peel Memorial Hospital represents a transformational investment to ensure continued access to high-quality care for families well into the future. Moving forward with the RFQ brings us closer to selecting the team that will design and build a world-class hospital which will deliver the comprehensive health care that the residents of Brampton deserve."

Infrastructure Ontario and Osler will evaluate the RFQ submissions to prequalify teams with the required design and construction experience to deliver a project of this size and complexity. Shortlisted teams will be invited to respond to a Request for Proposals (RFP), expected to be released in Fall 2024. The final design, construction schedule and budget will be determined in partnership with the successful proponent. As with all construction projects, dates are subject to change and to further government approvals.

When combined with the new Emergency Department, outpatient clinics, diagnostic imaging, surgery and other health services already operating on site, the new Peel Memorial Hospital will bring a significant boost in services for patients in Brampton and surrounding communities. The added inpatient capacity at the new Peel Memorial Hospital, along with new and expanded outpatient clinics, will address the significant need for more specialized care for patients requiring longer hospital stays before returning home or to other care facilities in the community.

Pre-construction preparations continue while Osler proceeds through the required stages of government approvals. In early 2024, the City of Brampton approved a necessary zoning by-law amendment application that enables hospital construction of this magnitude.
