When patients have timely access to their health information, they are more able to understand their care, prepare for appointments, and make informed decisions. Across 14 hospital sites in southwestern Ontario, MyCarePortal is helping make that possible.
The new portal gives patients free, secure access to key parts of their health record, including upcoming appointments, discharge summaries, and lab and imaging reports — all in one convenient place.
MyCarePortal is integrated with OneChart, the shared electronic health record system used by London Health Sciences Centre, St. Joseph’s Health Care London, and nine regional health care partners. Since launching on September 16, 2025, more than 6,200 users have already enrolled.
Designed with patients, for patients
MyCarePortal is the result of three years of collaboration among patients, caregivers, clinicians, and staff. A Patient and Caregiver Co-Design Team, made up of representatives from across the OneChart hospitals, played a key role in shaping the portal’s design.
“A lot of time and thought went into this project,” says Nerissa Taylor, Manager of the Virtual Care Program and MyCarePortal. “This is the largest Oracle Health patient portal rollout in Canada. We worked closely with our Patient and Caregiver Co-Design Team to create a portal that truly reflects what patients want and need.”
Patient advisors say the process ensured the portal focused on what matters most to patients.
“The staff really listened to our comments and ideas. I never felt it was just for show,” says Beth, a patient co-design team member. “The design team and other patient advisors were great to work with — such a thoughtful, intentional group.”
Another team member, Daryn, says the project brought together a wide range of perspectives.
“You don’t often think about the complexity of these projects and what it takes to complete them,” he says.
Early Results Show Strong Patient Satisfaction
Early feedback suggests the portal is already improving how patients engage with their care.
Since launch, 486 patient experience surveys have been completed, with 84 per cent of respondents reporting they are satisfied or very satisfied with MyCarePortal. Users also represent a broad age range, demonstrating that digital access to health information is valuable across generations.
Patients say having timely access to their health information helps them make informed decisions and advocate for their care.
One patient shared how access to imaging information helped accelerate treatment:
“I was able to see that my CAT scan had not been reported yet and was able to contact the department and ask them to have it read before my specialist appointment, which in turn expedited my surgery. Giving patients the tools to advocate for their own health is amazing.”
Another patient described how access to results helped them seek treatment sooner:
“With access to my results, I knew I had pneumonia and was able to get a prescription via TELUS Health before my doctor had seen the results, as this happened over the Christmas holidays.”
For others, the benefit is simply staying informed.
“So easy to use and helps me know what’s going on so I can take better care of myself.”
Research shows patient portals can support better health outcomes, including improved medication safety, better chronic disease management, and fewer emergency visits. By giving patients timely access to their information, portals help people feel more engaged and confident in managing their health.
Supporting a More Connected Care Experience
For the team behind MyCarePortal, the goal is to strengthen the connection between patients and their care teams.
“As a team, we’ve created a tool that empowers patients to manage their health, view their personal health information and prepare for appointments—all while building trust and transparency in care,” says Nerissa.
