Roy Butler

Board Member

Roy Butler is President and Chief Executive Officer of St. Joseph's Health Care London since August 2021. Roy is a collaborative and engaging servant leader who is building upon the organization's illustrious legacy of care, research and teaching to shape the future of health care and redefine what it means to be a health care provider. 

At the helm of one of Canada's most innovative, multi-site health care centres, Roy is committed to partnerships with patients, residents, caregivers, health care partners and diverse community organizations to enhance care and well-being within the walls of St. Joseph's and beyond. He applies a visionary and expansive approach to achieving excellence that encompasses a dedication to the economic and social health of our community by addressing disparities and breaking down barriers. 

Roy continually seeks and fosters unique opportunities that expand the impact of St. Joseph's including: partnering to establish an Indigenous-led hub on the grounds of St. Joseph's Parkwood Institute as part of a system-wide response in London to health and homelessness; becoming the first hospital in Southwestern Ontario to align its investments with its values through social impact investing; and participating in a National Nourish Collaborative that is harnessing the power of food to address health for people and the planet. Focused on uncompromising quality and safety, Roy has guided St. Joseph's to the highest designation of Accreditation with Exemplary Standing awarded by Accreditation Canada, extending an achievement the organization has sustained for 16 consecutive years. 

He has been instrumental in establishing St. Joseph's as a leader in discovery and knowledge translation that is distinguishing St. Joseph's on the global stage. In particular, pioneering advancements in molecular imaging and theranostics, mobility and activity, healthy aging, mental health, surgery innovations and ground-breaking exploration of the human microbiome are driving forward science and revolutionizing care.   

Roy has been a member of the St. Joseph's family for over 25 years, including 15 years providing executive leadership. With a deep-seated conviction in the organization's values of respect, excellence and compassion, he is dedicated to ensuring these principles and a culture of caring are hardwired across the workforce, at all levels and in every program and service. 

Roy holds a Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy from Queen's University and a PhD in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from Western University.  

As a volunteer in support of his community and the broader health care sector, Roy is currently  Chair of the Board of the Directors of the Ontario Clinical Imaging Network and is a board member of the London Economic Development Corporation, and Catholic Health Association of Ontario.
