Julia Goyal

Board Member

Julia Goyal is at the tail end of completing her joint doctorate degree in Public Health Sciences and Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering. On completion, she will be the first student to graduate with a Joint Interdisciplinary PhD degree between two faculties at the University of Waterloo. Her research focuses on using mixed methods to model health and well-being of front-line health care providers and provide insights in addressing health human resources challenges within home care. She has a strong interest in mental health advocacy and being an agent of change for workplace mental health. In particular, she is very passionate about change management and interventions to facilitate safe disclosure of mental health illness and/or challenges in Canadian workplaces.

Julia has won several highly competitive awards: VHA Home Healthcare Fellowship, Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarship, Ontario Graduate Scholarship, the Institute for Work & Health's Syme Training Fellowship, and Centre for Research on Work Disability Policy Fellowships. These national and provincial awards supplement Julia's other university-level scholarships awarded to top students.

Julia serves as a Board member of the Cambridge Memorial Hospital, Cambridge Memorial Hospital Foundation, the Canadian Mental Health Association (Waterloo-Wellington chapter), the Kitchener Waterloo Symphony, and the Canadian Association for Research on Work and Health. She also sits as a Public Member on the Council of College of Physicians and Surgeons (appointment by former Minister of Health Christine Elliott and the Cabinet of Ontario), and the Ontario Physicians and Surgeons Discipline Tribunal, to ensure the provision of quality health care for all Ontarians.

In the past, she has served as Co-President of the School of Public Health Sciences Graduate Student Association (2017-2021), Chair of Graduate Studies Endowment Fund (2017-2019), Senator on the Senate (2017-2021) and Governor on the Board of Governors (2018-2019, 2020-2021) at the University of Waterloo.
