Senator Sabi Marwah Congratulates SickKids in the Senate of Canada for Being Named Top Paediatric Hospital in the World by Newsweek

On June 22, 2022, Senator Sabi Marwah honoured The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in the Senate of Canada when he opened the Senate's sitting with a statement congratulating SickKids for being named the world's best paediatric hospital by Newsweek. His statement touched on a recent first-in-Canada surgery that was performed at SickKids, the hospital's efforts to support Ontario's COVID-19 response and SickKids' new strategic directions, including its mental health strategy and an organization-wide equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) strategy.

150 paediatric facilities were considered for Newsweek's list of the world's best paediatric hospitals. In partnership with global research firm Statista, Newsweek invited more than 40,000 medical professionals from more than 20 countries to recommend hospitals based on their level of expertise in a given medical subspecialty. Experts from all over the world were also able to participate via an online survey with data collected between June to August 2021. SickKids was ranked the top paediatric hospital, followed by Boston Children's Hospital and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, and was one of three Canadian hospitals in the top 10.

SickKids is Canada's most research-intensive hospital and the largest centre dedicated to improving children's health in the country. The hospital also engages in a variety of initiatives to improve child health around the world, including care, research and learning programming through the SickKids Centre for Global Child Health, SickKids International, its International Patient Program, and more.

In his remarks, the Hon. Sabi Marwah, who is also a former Chair of the SickKids Board of Trustees, said, “The Newsweek ranking is a testament to the extraordinary nurses, doctors, researchers and staff of SickKids who have shown continual resilience, innovation, commitment and a willingness to go above and beyond to carry out their mission while keeping patients, families and staff safe."
