The Ontario government's Anti-Racism Act, 2017 (ARA) provides the framework and requirements for the strategy and establishes targets and indicators to measure its effectiveness. Under this strategy, race-based data collection is being implemented in the justice, education and child welfare sectors to address racial inequities. Health information custodians, such as hospitals and other providers are not covered under the ARA. The Anti-Racism Directorate leads the Ontario government's anti-racism initiatives to build a more inclusive society, and works to identify, address and prevent systemic racism in government policy, legislation, programs and services. A timeline of the Directorate's initiatives, strategic plans and annual reports is listed here. The Directorate has also launched grants to support community-led initiatives that increase public education and awareness on the impact of racism and hate. As part of the Anti-Racism Act, 2017, the government must review the strategic plan at least every five years.
Data Standards for the Identification and Monitoring of Systemic Racism (Updated February 2024) is Ontario's complete standards and guidance for race-based data collection for government and other public sector organizations, including steps to follow for data collection, management, and use.
