The Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital ("PSFDH") has yet another reason to celebrate its orthopaedic program and services!

The PSFDH team is excited to announce that it now has the Zimmer Biomet's ROSA® Knee System ("ROSA") in place bringing together robotic technology with industry-leading knee implants to help surgeons personalize surgical procedures for their patients. ROSA is a robotically-assisted surgical system designed to help perform total knee replacement surgery.  It includes features to assist with bone resections and assessing the state of soft tissues in order to facilitate implant positioning intraoperatively. Information provided by ROSA assists with difficult decision-making and enables surgeons to use computer and software technology to control and move surgical instruments, allowing for greater accuracy and flexibility during procedures.

ROSA is another step in the PSFDH orthopedics program that supports same day orthopedic surgery services for patients and community.  While the patient will be back on their feet and home the same day, the hard work of rehabilitation and physiotherapy remains.  The use of robotics personalizes implants for an individual patient will enhance the patient's outcomes such as overall satisfaction and recuperation.

PSFDH is the 1st hospital in Eastern Ontario; 1st Community Hospital in Canada and the 5th hospital of all hospitals in Canada to receive this technology.

The first procedure was successfully completed on Wednesday, November 17, 2021 by Dr. Mark Roberts, PSFDH Orthopedic Surgeon and ROSA Knee System Lead.

For everyone involved – surgeons, medical staff and, most importantly, patients – ROSA has the potential to offer a number of key benefits and advantages," said Dr. Mark Roberts, PSFDH Orthopedic Surgeon. "We know the decision to have joint replacement is often a difficult one for patients to make, and we believe this type of technology has the potential to make it an easier one moving forward."
