Violence exists in all workplaces; however, when violence happens in a health care setting it can be devastating not only to the victim of violence but also to the hospital’s community. Violence in the healthcare workplace threatens the delivery of effective, quality care and diminishes individual’s rights to a safe working environment. The Dupont-Daniel Inquest recommendations have provided us with a framework that will allow us to get at some of the root causes of workplace violence.

Participants will examine the various forms that workplace violence can take such as harassment, bullying, abuse or physical assault. They will learn about the impact of allowing violence to go unchallenged; including the costs in both human and monetary terms. They will become familiar with the resources that are needed to develop an effective workplace violence prevention program.

Topics include an overview of workplace violence; preventing workplace violence - One Hospital's Story; panel on establishing a workplace violence prevention program; Violence Prevention: a stepwise approach for the employer; physician behaviour in the workplace: current expectations; and Case Studies: lessons learned from experience, from the physician behaviour; patient/family/visitor and staff/nursing perspectives.

The goal of this conference is to provide practical methods in the prevention of workplace violence as hospitals continue to promote a culture of respect and safety for the protection of patients and employees
