Ontario Hospital Association and Canadian Union of Public Employees Ratify Agreement for Thousands of Ontario Hospital Workers
Toronto – Ontario hospitals and 18,000 hospital employees have voted in favour of a new, three-year agreement following negotiations between the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE). Hospital workers voted 97% in favour of the agreement, while participating CUPE hospitals voted 98% in favour.
“The number of hospitals and their employees showing support for this agreement indicates that this is a solid contract that addresses current and future needs,” said Hilary Short, President and CEO of the OHA. “By working very hard to reach this agreement, both CUPE and the OHA are setting the stage for an even more productive working relationship over the next several years.”
This is the third consecutive freely negotiated agreement with CUPE, and it represents three years of predictable results in the labour market for hospital employers.
Key details of the agreement include:
• Improved labour stability from a proposed three-year term (running from September 29, 2006 to September 28, 2009)
• Base wage increases of 2.75 percent in 2006, 3 percent in 2007 and 2.60 percent in 2008
The OHA and CUPE would like to extend their sincere thanks and appreciation to mediator Bill Kaplan for his key role in assisting the parties in reaching this collective agreement.
This new agreement will cover 56 participating hospitals and approximately 18,000 employees. Generally speaking, the agreement will cover dietary assistants, house-keeping, clerical staff, and 3600 nurses.
