Ontario Hospital Association Supportive of Move to Develop New Models for Emergency Room Physicians
TORONTO – Ontario’s hospitals are strongly supportive of the Government of Ontario and Ontario Medical Association (OMA) decision to develop new models for emergency room physicians as this is a key step forward in easing the pressures facing emergency rooms in Ontario hospitals, the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) said today.
“Ontario’s hospitals believe that by moving forward with changes to the models covering emergency rooms physicians, that greater stability can be achieved in the delivery of emergency room services,” OHA President and CEO Hilary Short said today. “We also believe that Ontario’s hospitals should be on equal footing when it comes to the supply of emergency room physicians and that any practice of “topping-up” physician payments outside the emergency room models that are agreed to by the Government and OMA, must end in an orderly and consistent manner.”
The OHA also strongly endorses the 17 recommendations of the tri-partite OHA/OMA/Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care report entitled “Access to Emergency Care: Addressing System Issues” released on Monday. These recommendations provide long-term solutions to many of the structural issues associated with patient access to emergency room care.
“Ontario’s hospitals know that all health system partners have a responsibility to work together to improve access to emergency room services,” added Short. “It is absolutely vital that we move forward in implementing the recommendations that hospitals, physicians and the ministry have reached together.”
