TORONTO – The Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) welcomed today’s announcement by Health and Long Term Care Minister George Smitherman on the future roles of Sunnybrook and Women's, Women's College and the Orthopedic and Arthritic Institute, as it represents a thoughtful and creative approach to addressing the complex issued associated with the original merger of these organizations.
“Today’s announcement by the Ontario government is also a strong vote of confidence in the importance of independent, voluntary governance,” said OHA President and CEO Hilary Short. “The OHA believes that the collaborative resolution of the roles and mandates of Sunnybrook and Women’s and Women’s College will help advance health system change and transformation.”
The decision to establish an independent, self-governed centre of excellence for women’s heath at Women’s College Hospital will ensure that both organizations are strongly positioned to embrace their future role in Ontario’s heath care system.
Today’s capital announcement by the Ontario government will result in a needed expansion in health services for some of Ontario’s most critically ill and seriously injured patients.
“This capital investment at Sunnybrook and Women’s is good news for Ontario patients,” added Short. “It will improve the delivery of healthcare by helping to reduce waiting times for hip and knee replacements while increasing capacity in crucial areas such as neo-natal intensive care and emergency room care.”
