OHA Launches Patient Safety Guidebook during Canadian Patient Safety Week

Today the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) released a new patient safety booklet that highlights practical and effective patient safety strategies from hospitals across Ontario as part Canadian Patient Safety Week (CPSW).

“Patient safety is a priority in every Ontario hospital,” said Hilary Short, President and CEO of the OHA. “This collection of patient safety strategies shows the innovative techniques hospital staff use to ensure patients receive the highest level of care.”

Developed by the OHA’s Patient Safety Support Service (PSSS), Inspiring Ideas and Celebrating Successes: A Guidebook to Leading Patient Safety Practices in Ontario Hospitals provides a sampling of patient safety initiatives that hospitals can explore, learn from and potentially adopt in their own facility.

“Whether it is maintaining up-to-the-minute medication information or organizing managers to conduct executive walkabouts and learn first hand about new patient safety issues, communication is what helps a safe culture take root and continue to grow,” Short said.

Copies of the Guidebook can be found at www.oha.com/patientsafetybooklet

The PSSS provides Ontario hospitals with information, tools and training to promote effective strategies that enhance patient safety. The “Your Health Care - Be Involved” Campaign is a major PSSS project that encourages Ontarians to take an active role in their health care.

Canadian Patient Safety Week, an initiative of the Canadian Patient Safety Institute, runs from October 20 to October 27. Now in its second year, CPSW 2006 focuses on hand hygiene and emphasizes that cleaning hands well and often is a proven way to reduce the spread of infections in heath care settings.
