As the patient safety movement continues to gain momentum, the focus to date has primarily been on patient safety in the acute care setting. Consequently, there is a significant gap in the current understanding of patient safety within mental health. The patient safety issues that affect the mental health population are unique and challenging for those working in this sector as well as those receiving care and there is an overwhelming need for these issues to be addressed within the mental health sector.
In recognition of this need the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA), in partnership with the Canadian Patient Safety Institute (CPSI), is pleased to present this one-day national conference on patient safety and mental health. This conference will provide participants the opportunity to hear about critical patient safety issues for the mental health population from international and national leading experts. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss the major themes, priority issues and actions for patient safety in mental health; discuss and learn about best practices and programs; and share ideas and knowledge to advance the patient safety agenda in the mental health sector.
Topics to be addressed include:
- creating a culture of patient safety within the mental health sector;
- medication safety;
- transitions in care;
- creating safe environments for patients and staff;
- patient engagement;
- risk management; and
- violence in the workplace.
