URGENT – FRASER INSTITUTE REPORT ON ONTARIO’S HOSPITALS RELEASED

The Fraser Institute (FI) has this morning released a report on hospital quality in Ontario. The report, entitled Hospital Report Card: 2006, is available for viewing at www.hospitalreportcards.ca.

This report assesses 50 measures of patient safety and quality of care for every acute care hospital in Ontario – including those that chose not to participate in the FI study. Only the 43 hospitals that originally agreed to participate in the FI study are named; the rest are identified by number. According to the FI news release, the study is based on data purchased from Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) for the years 1997 to 2005. The study also uses the same data to assess patient outcomes by municipality.

OHA staff are currently reviewing the report’s findings and methodology, and will provide Members with additional details later today.

Ontario’s hospitals embrace, and are leaders in, accountability. No other hospital system in Canada reports to the public to the extent that ours does. Ontario’s hospitals have reported publicly on a wide variety of measures for over a decade through the OHA’s Hospital Report initiative – the acknowledged “gold standard” of hospital performance assessment. The methodology used in Hospital Report was developed collaboratively by health care experts and has been peer-reviewed. In addition, the results of every Hospital Report are peer-reviewed.
