There continues to be a demand for high quality continuing education, orientation and patient education programs in acute care and community settings. This has resulted in a need for professionals with the design and implementation skills to provide these services. This five-day program is primarily directed to registered nurses and other health care professionals who educate through staff development or patient education programs in hospitals, community agencies, community colleges and professional organizations. It is designed to be highly interactive and experiential in nature. There will be an opportunity to share the experience and expertise of the group with a focus to becoming better educators and life long learners. Hundreds of beginning, as well as seasoned educators have shared the experiences offered through the program since it began in 1988.
Objectives of the Program
Understand the planning process for programs
- Understand the impact of trends, organizational change and restructuring on the learning environment;
- Be aware of the components of curriculum design, program planning, and marketing on the education process;
- Understand the importance of coaching in the educator role
Adult Education Principles and Learning Theories
As an educator it is critical to understand the principles of adult education and how adults learn. The success of any program rests in the skills of the educator in knowing the audience and how to relate to them. The flexibility in teaching methods will help to augment the content and context of the learning situation.
Change Process, Power & Politics and the Educator Role
The health care arena is in a constant state of turmoil. The education system and infrastructure are often one of the first targets in restructuring, downsizing, etc. It is important to understand the shifting paradigms in the system and the power and politics of the internal system in order to promote education. The educator acts more as a consultant, contracting with the various departments to offer education and programming.
Design Considerations, Program Development and Presentation Skills
Designing programs requires planning the flow of educational programming. The content and context of the program will influence the design of the program. Presentation skills are important to the delivery of content as well as the learning that is to take place. Part of the process requires the educator to give and receive feedback about the education process. Evaluation is a component of the process that is often forgotten.
Strategic Marketing of Programs
It is not enough to put together a good program. In today's world of competing priorities it is critical to be able to market programs that have been developed. No longer do we have an audience that is just waiting for educational opportunities. The educator needs to develop the skill of marketing programs in the organizational setting.
Coaching in Education
The role of coach in the health care system is crucial for the future of the system. The educator must possess coaching skills as well as be able to assist others in developing them.
Participant Presentation/Project
Each participant will complete a presentation/project as part of the program. This provides an opportunity to put many of the concepts of the program together and receive feedback.
