This course is practical in its focus and is applications-oriented. Participants will be able to directly apply course contents to a subject of interest to them or their organization. This will be achieved through the development of a three-phase project. Sufficient instructional feedback will be offered to participants to ensure the successful undertaking of a research project by the course's conclusion. Ultimately, the course will equip participants with significant skills to design and implement future in-house research projects.
Course Objectives:
When you complete this course you should find your professional and managerial skills enriched through a basic working knowledge of applied research methods pertaining to institutional and community health organizations.
Participants who successfully complete the course should be able to:
- Design simple opinion surveys or practical experiments that meet specific objectives and adhere to predetermined budgets and schedules.
- Construct reliable and valid research instruments.
- Effectively collect qualitative and quantitative data.
- Analyze, present and facilitate the implementation of research findings.
Course Content:
Research Applications: Research as a management tool;
Qualitative Research: Quick and easy ways to gather valuable information;
Surveys: How to design surveys that work; Experiments: Experimentation and program evaluation; Project Planning: Research design, budgeting, scheduling and obtaining funds;
Instrument Design: Constructing effective questionnaires;
Analysis and Presentation: Tabulating and presenting findings that are "user-friendly"; Implementing Results: Using research results to institute organizational change
Program Leader:
Dr. David Sheridan holds a Bachelor of Commerce from Carleton University, a Master of Arts from York University and a Doctor of Education from the University of Toronto. In the past 17 years, David has operated an active consulting practice that has provided on-site training and consultations to public and private sector organizations across Canada, the United States and in Asia. His firm has offered research, planning, facilitation and organizational development services to hospitals, community health agencies, long-term care facilities, health associations and municipal health departments.
