Background on Public Reporting of Patient Safety Indicators
On May 28, 2008 the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) announced new public reporting requirements on eight patient safety indicators as part of a comprehensive plan to create an unprecedented level of transparency in Ontario’s hospitals.
The OHA supports public reporting on patient safety and quality indicators because we believe it will inspire improved performance, enhance patient safety, and strengthen public confidence in Ontario’s hospitals.
The MOHLTC appointed Dr. Michael Baker, physician-in-chief at the University Health Network as Executive Lead - Patient Safety, to oversee the government’s patient safety agenda. The OHA participates on Dr. Baker's Expert Panel and is working with the MOHLTC to provide input about these reporting requirements, develop educational and communication support materials in order to support its members in the successful implementation of reporting.
