Our Goals:
- Improve provincial health HR strategic planning.
- Ensure the appropriate supply, distribution, and utilization of health care professionals.
Accomplishments to March 31, 2011 include:
- Encouraged the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care to create a multi-stakeholder advisory council to the government on health human resources (HHR).
- Expanded membership of the OHA Strategic Human Resources Provincial Leadership Council to include a representative from Community Care Access Centres (CCACs), long-term care, educational institutions, and Local Health Integration Networks (LHINs).
- Released the Current State of Health Human Resources Planning Structures and Activities – a research report that provides an inventory of health human resources planning structures and activities at the local, LHIN, provincial, federal, and international level.
- Formed an advocacy sub-group of the OHA Strategic HR Provincial Leadership Council to identify potential themes and topics to be included in 2010/2011 OHA advocacy efforts.
- Submitted proposals to HealthForce Ontario Healthy Work Environments Innovation Fund Grant Program.
- Participated in the Ontario Health Human Resources Research Network, an initiative of the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, to address health human resource issues and build capacity in HHR research.
- Created a web-based site titled, Employing Internationally Educated Health Professionals Resource Centre. The site gathers information and links on recruiting, retaining, and integrating internationally educated health professionals in one place.
- Hosted a conference on Recruiting, Retaining, and Integrating Internationally Educated Health Professionals.
- Published Strategies for Success – Integrating Internationally Educated Health Professionals into the Ontario Workforce – a report prepared by Dr. Andrea Baumann and Dr. Jennifer Blythe from the Nursing Health Services Research Unit (NHSRU) at McMaster University.
- Leading a project to develop an employer's guide to support the implementation of 'leading practice'approaches and programs that effectively recruit, retain, and integrate internationally educated nurses (IENs). The initiative is funded by the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration and is in partnership with the NHSRU and six hospitals.
- Completed year one activities of the IEN project including:
- A literature review of existing research on the needs of workforce planners, recruiters, managers, and educators as well as strategies for workforce integration of IENs.
- Conducting a survey on hospital Chief Nursing Executives to provide baseline data about IEN employment and programs for IEN integration.
- Interviews with key stakeholders (employers, regulatory bodies, IENs, etc.) to describe existing strategies and identify where guidance is needed.
- Conducting a networking and sharing event for health care bridging projects in Ontario.
- Planning for fall 2011 workshops with HR and nursing leaders and stakeholders to assess the relevance of the guidelines, identify gaps, and suggest improvements.
