Leading Practices for Addressing Clinical Manager Span of Control (SOC) in Ontario identifies key leading practices and strategies that health care employers can consider to assist in alleviating negative impacts of large manager spans of control on staff and patients. The report was prepared by the Hay Group and contains findings based on a review of relevant literature and the results of surveys with over 700 Nursing Managers and interviews with 12 Senior Nursing/ Patient Care Leaders in hospitals, long-term care homes, and community care access centres.
This report is associated with the OHA Provincial Health Human Resources Strategic Plan 2008-2011, which identified providing resources and support to members on Span of Control as one of its ten priorities.
Research is also underway by the Council of Academic Hospitals (CAHO) on SOC with funding through the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-term Care Nursing Research Fund. The study, Examining the Relationships between Clinical Manager Span of Control and Manager and Unit Work Outcomes in Ontario Academic Hospitals, is being lead by the University of Western Ontario and the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, and examines the relationship between clinical manager SOC and manager and unit outcomes (such as absenteeism, sick time, turnover, and patient satisfaction) in 15 Ontario Academic Hospitals. The study is expected to be completed in late 2012.
Although the CAHO and the OHA studies have a different focus; both groups will look for opportunities to collaborate. At completion of the CAHO project, the OHA will ensure that members receive a copy of the project findings and are made aware of educational or other knowledge translation opportunities.
