Toronto, ON – Yesterday, in an interview with B.C. reporter Natalie North, Fraser Institute spokesperson Nadeem Esmail claimed that Ontario hospitals lack transparency when it comes to reporting performance indicators.
Mr. Esmail appears to be unaware that in March 2009, the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) launched myhospitalcare.ca, a website that provides comprehensive data on over 40 hospital performance indicators to patients and their families in an easy to understand format.
“I like to think of myhospitalcare.ca as a model of transparency and accountability. With extensive data on hospital performance readily available to patients and their families, I believe that Ontario’s hospitals are leaders in this respect,” said OHA President and CEO Tom Closson.
The OHA encourages the Fraser Institute and all Ontarians to visit www.myhospitalcare.ca. Performance information can be searched by hospital, location, type of care or indicator.
“I am proud to say that Ontario’s hospitals are among the most accountable in Canada,” said Tom Closson.
Ontario hospitals operate in one of the most demanding health care accountability systems in Canada, and
are required to report publicly on a number of performance measures. The site provides measurements on acute care paediatrics, emergency, rehabilitation, mental health, chronic and complex care, as well as patient experience indicators such as the patients’ overall rating of their hospital care.
