The Excellent Care for All Act, 2010, has strengthened board accountability for quality and patient safety.  In order to identify issues and support improvement, boards require clear, understandable indicators of patient safety and quality.  Indicators that measure patient safety and quality performance that are aligned with the organization’s strategy can help boards ensure that they are effectively steering their organizations towards quality improvement.  Boards are not required to review the minutiae of an organization’s activities and performance, and as such, indicators need to be tailored to the boards' oversight needs.

This section outlines best practices, tools and key considerations for boards on the issue of measurement and reporting of patient safety and quality.
