Developing strong working relationships with clinical leaders is critical to the board as it works to strengthen the quality agenda of its organization. This is because clinicians on the front lines of patient care are the key messengers of an organization's quality message. For hospital boards, understanding the clinician perspective on quality and patient safety can provide insights into areas of high performance as well as gaps related to quality and patient safety. Therefore, boards should also engage management to help strengthen support from clinical leaders for the organization’s quality agenda. The board should also understand the roles, responsibilities and reporting requirements of the Medical Advisory Committee (MAC), and how it works in collaboration with the MAC and quality committee.
