Building a High Performing Board: Best Practices in Director Recruitment (#586)

The Governance Centre of Excellence (GCE) is pleased
to present the webcast “Building a High-Performing
Board: Best Practices in Director Recruitment”. Director
recruitment is often event driven: the annual meeting is
fast approaching; there are vacancies on the board that
need to be filled; quick consideration is given to who can
quickly be tapped into serving as a Director or who owes
the organization a favour. It’s not surprising that many
boards don’t feel they’re ideally equipped to fulfill their
responsibilities. Working within whatever restrictions may
be required by such things as the organization’s by-laws,
boards should consider undertaking an effective process
to help ensure an optimal mix of skills and experience.

An effective board recruitment and nominations process
is essential for bringing the best talent to the board.
This session will provide strategies and resources
for recruiting board directors that possess the skills,
knowledge and other attributes needed in order for the
board to effectively carry out its responsibilities.
Participants will receive a clear understanding of the core
competencies required for the position, the role of the
Board Chair and Nominations Committee and elements
of an effective recruitment and orientation process.

If you missed the e-Patients: Changing the Health Care System in Real-Time conference on September 21, 2010 you have another opportunity to listen to the sessions by purchasing the archived conference!

Today’s patients are e-patients, driving system change via the Internet. They are researching health information online and using social networks to instantly share with others who have common health care interests and experiences.

As health care leaders, how do we work with e-patients in real time to improve health care delivery? Hospitals are starting to realize the power and promise of social media, and to use it strategically as they work to improve dialogue with stakeholders. Yet there remains considerable apprehension of social media inside health care organizations.

The key objectives at the e-Patients: Changing the Health Care System in Real-Time conference were to prepare attendees to better engage patients on a real time basis, and to address fears, opportunities and risks in this context. Attendees also heard presentations on how social media could change health care delivery and outcomes, and how it can empower and engage patients, drive their satisfaction and even improve their treatment options.

Hospital Procurement & Guidelines - Webcast (#525)

The recent controversies at eHealth and Cancer Care Ontario have underscored the importance of transparency and accountability in healthcare procurements. Which hospitals and related healthcare bodies are impacted – and with what results to policy and practice in those institutions?

Lean: What it means to your Organization - Webcast (#523)

Applying Lean principles to health care systems in Canada is continuing to gain traction as more and more internal ambassadors see the efficiencies to be achieved while also being assured that these are not won through cost-cutting that leaves patients vulnerable.

However, many Lean initiatives have failed to deliver significant value to customers when work is not aligned with the organization’s strategy and does not fully motivate the workforce. Effective leadership and employee engagement are critical success factors for sustainable Lean improvements in any organization.

What can Lean mean to your organization?

What are the benefits for employees and patients? What does the Board need to know to help achieve improvements and create a sustainable ‘Lean’ organization?

Speakers include:

Steve Hardgrave has over 15 years experience in implementing Lean as both a consultant and as a line manager.

Caroline Brereton is a senior healthcare executive with over 25 years of experience, most recently at the executive level in acute care hospital operations.
