Emergency Department (ED) Medical Directives Implementation Kit

The ED Prototype Medical Directives Implementation Kit was developed by ED physicians and nurse educators in response to the tripartite (Ontario Hospital Association/Ontario Medical Association/Ministry of Health and Long Term Care) Physician Hospital Care Committee (PHCC) report entitled Improving Access to Emergency Care: Addressing System Issues (2006). The Implementation Kit addresses recommendations arising from the report, particularly the need to “maximize the use of medical directives within the emergency department, in order to increase efficiency of patient flow and patient care”

The ED Prototype Medical Directives Implementation Kit was designed to assist physicians and health professional staff across the province with developing, approving and implementing medical directives in their EDs.  As directives are customized to suit specific circumstances, hospital physicians and staff may develop or adopt those that best suit their circumstances (e.g. based on patient population, team composition, best practice preferences and information support systems).

The Implementation Kit is available to all EDs across Ontario and can be viewed or downloaded in its entirety or by individual sections. It is not intended as a standard of practice or required set of directives, but as a resource to be used as ED physicians and other health care professionals see fit.
