Leading Excellence in Governance
Our Goal: Strengthen governance throughout the health care sector.
“Ontario is the last province in Canada to have hospital governance under the stewardship of volunteer boards. And, even though Ontario is home to the most efficient, transparent and accountable hospitals in Canada, we know that we can do more. Our boards matter. But with our valued roles, comes great responsibility.” - Peter Johnson, 2010-2011 OHA Board Chair
- OHA/GCE 2010 Governance Survey: On May 17, the OHA, along with its Governance Centre of Excellence (GCE) released the 2010 OHA/GCE Governance Survey. The 2010 survey builds on baseline information on governance policies and practices of hospital boards collected in the 2007 survey. The survey also helps measure the progress hospital boards have made in the uptake of leading practices in a broad range of areas, and provide members the opportunity to share and detail their governance issues and challenges.
- OHA Governance Programs: The OHA held 22 governance programs and two webcast programs which included: Essentials Certificate in Health Care Governance for New Directors, a conference for Not-for-Profit and Charitable Organizations (first ever), a course on Essentials of Governance for Public Sector Boards (held in partnership with Maytree Foundation), and the first in the Accountability Series: Accountability and Transparency in the Health Care Sector.
- OHA Prototype By-Laws: The OHA released its new By-laws (Prototype Corporate By-Laws and the Board-Appointed Professional Staff By-Laws) on February 3, 2010. The By-laws were updated to ensure that they effectively meet the needs of Ontario hospitals. The OHA has been supporting members as they begin to adopt them.
