Be part of this event and learn more about leadership in the volunteer sector! What makes a good leader? How
do you identify and develop the next leader? What are some skills and qualities that a leader must have?

At this year’s conference, delegates will participate in an interactive learning exercise which will provide
participants with the opportunity to engage in dialogue and share their knowledge and experience on issues that
volunteer leaders face day-to-day. After the conference, participants will receive the summary of the findings of
this exercise, which should be a valuable resource and have a positive impact on their job performance.

The goal of this exercise is to have participants involved in an open discussion where they can share their knowledge and experience to find solutions to issues volunteers and volunteer managers face day-to-
day. Topics of discussion include:

Leadership Recruitment and Development
• What steps would be involved in “passing the torch” to new leadership?

Advocacy
• How do you advocate for your role within the organization?
• What a two minute conversation about your role/job description would sound like?

Young Volunteers

• How do you recruit and retain them?
• How can the old generation and new generation find ways to learn and work together?

Financial Accountability/ Fundraising
• How do we make front line volunteers aware of the financial situation of hospitals and its impact on volunteers?
• Should volunteers be expected to raise money for the organization? If so, should they be accountable for how much they raise?

Program Review
• What are some of the processes for reviewing the quality/efficiency/relevance of volunteer-run programs?
• When and how do you decide to stop a program?
• What are the steps for implementing a new program?

Technology
• What should volunteers be expected to know in terms of technology?
• Should technology training be made available for volunteers? If so, how often should it be done? How can this be achieved at no cost?

Transitions (Change of Roles, Dismissal,etc.)
• How should we handle discussions about transitions or dismissals?
• How do we support volunteers when moving into a new role?

Skills to Deal with Difficult People or Situations
• What are some of the difficult situations you have encountered in your work/volunteer life recently?
• What steps could be taken in order to better handle difficult conversations or situations?
