OHA Submissions and Standing Committee Presentations

In Ontario, the legislative process by which a bill is introduced and eventually becomes law can be quite complex. Once a bill has been introduced (First Reading), a debate on the principles of the bill occurs (debate on Second Reading). Most often, a bill is sent to a Standing Committee of the Legislature at this juncture for public hearings and possible amendments.

The Committee process is an important part of the legislative process as it allows for public consultation on government policy. The OHA utilizes the Committee hearings as opportunities to advocate on behalf of its members for amendments, where appropriate, for the Committee to consider before the bill eventually becomes law.  Member consultation and feedback form the basis of the messaging and recommendations put forward by the OHA throughout this process.
