Improving the Emergency Department Patient Experience

Monitoring patient perceptions of hospital care is a key indicator of the quality of services provided in hospitals. Since 1997, the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) has provided leadership in Ontario by encouraging its members to measure patient experience’s of care through the coordination of a standardized measurement process.

The more recent establishment of the Emergency Department Patient Experience Performance Advisory Committee (ER PIAC) is part of a larger strategy to support Ontario’s hospitals in their ongoing efforts to improve the emergency department patient experience. The first in the series of supports is a review of worldwide emergency department patient experience leading practices. The review, conducted by InfoFinders, can be accessed here. To access the snapshot or summary of identified strategies, please click here.

Next steps include an Ontario call for leading practice submissions.

This is an exciting opportunity for the OHA to play a role in helping hospitals improve the ED patient experience and will also inform patient experience performance improvement in other sectors.
