Hospitals across Ontario expressed their strong interest in finding ways to conserve energy and reduce waste generation by applying to the Green Hospital Champion Fund’s Audit Program before the application deadline on February 28, 2011. Viewing this as a testament to Hospitals’ growing interest in environmental sustainability, GHCF project manager Graham Takata is enthusiastic about the response.
“The response was overwhelming – with interest from hospitals of all sizes and locations, the GHCF has been able to give sustainability a much needed boost that will lead to financial savings for years to come.”
Through collaboration with industry leaders Union Gas Limited and Enbridge Gas Distribution, and through the efforts of hospitals and their vendors to provide highly competitive quotations, the GHCF Audit Program was able to stretch its audit program budget and exceed targets for participation. While the GHCF is still reviewing the applications, the GHCF anticipates funding 90 audits before funding for this stage is exhausted.
The data provided through the audit program will allow the GHCF to establish a baseline of waste and energy performance and share best practices among the hospital community in Ontario.
