Patient Safety from the Heart

St. John’s Rehab Hospital and its founders, the Sisters of St. John the Divine, are working together towards a very comprehensive patient safety culture. The OHA’s “Your Health Care – Be Involved” poster can be found throughout the hospital, on all inpatient and outpatient areas. The Sisters distribute our “Patient Safety” brochure, modeled on the OHA’s brochure, to all newly admitted patients. They encourage all patients to ask questions of the staff about their care and medications.

At St. John’s we conduct regular Patient Safety Lunch ‘n Learn sessions for staff and Patient Safety Focus Groups for patients. All indications are that our Patient Safety efforts are well received. Our Inpatient Satisfaction Survey results for the first quarter of this fiscal year were extremely positive. With a response rate of 53.7%, our inpatients returned a percent positive score of 100% on ‘quality of care/services received’, and we were the highest performer among Ontario rehab hospitals in ‘concern/caring shown by therapists’ and also in ‘information given by therapists’, with both at 100%. An impressive 44% of our outpatients returned ‘excellent’ ratings for the quality of care and services they received here.

All in all, St. John’s presents a healthy patient safety culture, and is working towards making it even better!
