Ontario Legislative Session Ends
On Monday June 4, 2007, Lieutenant Governor James Bartleman prorogued the Ontario Legislature three weeks early, ending a busy spring session that saw passage of 14 government bills. Bill 171, the Health System Improvements Act, and Bill 140, the
Long-Term Care Homes Act both received Royal Assent on the final day of the spring session.
Prorogation is the act of completely ending a session of Parliament, and has the effect of terminating all outstanding business before the House. While the Legislature has the ability to carry over certain items of business from one session to the next, the following bills of interest to the hospital sector were not carried forward:
- Bill 30, Safe Needles Save Lives Act, 2006;
- Bills 61, 67,and 79 (all related to Organ Donation);
- Bill 92, Ombudsman Amendment Act (Hospitals and Long-Term Care Facilities), 2006;
- Bill 141, Patient-to-Doctor Ratio Act, 2006; and
- Bill 142, Transparency in Public Matters Act, 2006.
This legislative session was almost certainly the last before the October 10, 2007 Ontario General Election.
