TORONTO - The Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) today welcomed Minister of Health and Long-Term Care George Smitherman’s announcement of a $58.3 million investment to improve access to community-based addiction and mental health programs.

"Today’s announcement means that more Ontarians will be able to access the mental health services they need closer to their homes," said OHA President and CEO Hilary Short. "This is an important investment for patients and their families."

According to the details of today's announcement, the McGuinty government will provide $58.3 million in 2005/06 to expand case management, early intervention, supportive housing and crisis response services at the community level. In addition, this funding will be used to stabilize the operation of existing addiction treatment programs and community counseling programs.

"Expanding access to community-based addiction and mental health services will help relieve pressure on hospitals," added Ms. Short. "This will allow hospitals to focus on doing what only they can do - provide high-quality care to the very sickest patients."

"Today’s announcement is a significant, positive step in the Government of Ontario’s plan to more effectively meet Ontarians’ health care needs."
