TORONTO – The Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) today welcomed the announcement of 52 new Family Health Teams by Premier Dalton McGuinty and Health & Long-Term Care Minister George Smitherman, as they will improve Ontarians’ access to doctors, nurses, and other health professionals.

“Today’s announcement means that more patients will get the comprehensive primary care they need, when they need it,” said OHA President and CEO Hilary Short. “This is great news for patients in communities across Ontario.”

According to the details of today's announcement, 52 multidisciplinary Family Health Teams will provide comprehensive health services to more than 1 million Ontarians 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

“By providing around-the-clock care, Family Health Teams will help relieve pressure on hospitals,” added Ms. Short. "This will help hospitals focus on doing what only they can do – providing high-quality care to the very sickest patients.”

“This is an important step in transforming our provinces’ health care system, and we look forward to the creation of even more Family Health Teams over the coming months.”
