TORONTO, ON – Hilary Short, President and CEO of the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA), spoke about the realities of the alternate-level-of-care (ALC) situation in Ontario’s hospitals this morning at an OHA conference, entitled “The ALC Challenge – Making the Most of a Difficult Situation.”

The conference was designed to promote networking and knowledge sharing among provincial health care organizations and professionals. By bringing professionals from across the health care sector together, the OHA is enabling the sharing of best practices and the formation of new partnerships and strategies for responding to the growing ALC issue.

“The inability to transition ALC patients to a more appropriate level of care is cause for concern as it is the symptom of a larger capacity issue across the continuum of care,” said Hilary Short during her speaking remarks. “Ontario’s hospitals are facing a growing and very real challenge in that many are increasingly unable to discharge patients in need of alternate levels of care in a timely fashion.”

Short’s speech (attached to this news release) focused on the collaborative efforts and insightful innovations that health care organizations across Ontario have accomplished in response to their communities’ needs. She also outlined some of the solutions that the OHA is advocating for to help provide longer-term solutions to the growing ALC issue.

Health care system leaders, planners, managers and providers were invited to attend this conference not only to obtain an understanding of the scale and scope of the ALC challenges that lie ahead, but also to share the lessons learned through the many focused and collaborative efforts and research already underway to address these issues.
