OHA Introduces New Initiative

For the Attention of Hospital CEOs, Board Chairs, OHA Board of Directors and CACN Members

From Warren DiClemente, Vice President, Operations and Educational Services

I am very pleased to announce that in February, the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) will launch a new initiative devoted to ensuring our hospitals remain ecologically sustainable as we deal increasingly with issues relating to water conservation and energy efficiency within our institutions.

Building on the success of the OHA HealthAchieve2004 Green Lane and Green Health Care Session, and with assistance from the Ontario Ministry of Energy, the OHA’s new Green Health Care initiative will aim to educate OHA members about the benefits of maintaining a sound ecological environment within their hospitals, and provide practical tools to assist in improving environmental conditions.

The OHA has long-recognized the importance of remaining environmentally responsible, and supporting its members in their efforts to become more informed about how to better "green" their organizations. As part of the Green Health Care initiative, the OHA will develop a Green Health Care Toolkit, providing information and resources on how to effectively deal with issues such as waste, air emissions, water conservation, and energy efficiency.

The Toolkit will be released at the OHA's Green Health Care conference - Green Health Care: Building the Foundations of an Environmental Strategy - on February 23, 2005, which will serve as the official launch of the initiative. In addition, a new logo for the program will be unveiled during the conference. Other projects, such as a videoconference on March 8 and an Energy Efficiency Innovations workshop on March 9, have also been planned as part of the initiative.
