OHA Appearance at Public Accounts Committee re: Auditor General's Report

Today, I appeared before the Standing Committee on Public Accounts today to discuss Chapter 3.06 of the Auditor General’s 2006 Annual Report: Hospitals – Management and Use of Diagnostic Imaging Equipment. Joining me were Dr. Paul Babyn, Radiologist-in-Chief at the Hospital for Sick Children and an Associate Professor at the University of Toronto’s Department of Medical Imaging, and Judith Reid, a Radiation Protection Technologist at both the University Health Network and Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto

Dr. Babyn, Ms. Reid and I addressed the findings of the report and answered questions regarding wait times for CT and MRI scans, Workplace Safety and Insurance Board of Ontario (WSIB) patients and pediatric protocols for diagnostic imaging.

Deputy Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, Ron Sapsford, also addressed the committee and answered questions.

The Standing Committee on Public Accounts is a committee of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario that examines, assesses, and reports to the Legislature on a number of issues, including the Auditor’s Annual Report and the economy and efficiency of government operations.

We expect that a Hansard transcript of these proceedings will be available online at www.ontla.on.ca/hansard by Monday December, 18, 2006.

I have attached both my remarks, and Deputy Minister Sapsford’s remarks, to this bulletin.
