Disclosure and Risk Management are significant priorities for any health care organization. Recognizing the challenges of increasing expectations, varied interpretations and significant implications for health care organizations, the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) is pleased to offer a two-day conference for risk managers, legal counsel, senior administrators, hospital privacy officers, health information managers, hospital board members, CEOs, long-term care facilities, and community care access centres.
This program is available as a one or two-day conference:
Day One of the program will explore a number of current challenges in risk management, both in hospitals and in other health care institutions. Panelists will provide both a legal and a practical perspective on how hospitals can effectively manage their risks in today’s changing health care system.
The program will highlight a number of recent cases, outside of Ontario, that deal with the issues surrounding the improper sterilization of medical devices. The day will also feature practical examples related to how a number of hospitals have successful integrated complementary and alternative therapies into their organization, ways to manage risk associated with medical directives, disclosures to the police, and successfully securing compliance with regulatory requirements.
Day Two will focus exclusively on disclosure and the Quality of Care Information Protection Act. Ontario’s hospitals continue to face unique challenges in the implementation of QCIPA within their organization’s risk management practices and procedures and are continually looking for ways to more effectively put these into practice.
In addition to highlighting the OHA’s second QCIPA Toolkit, “From Law to Practice: Revisiting the Quality of Care Information Protection Act”, the conference will assist participants in developing a heightened understanding of the new critical incident reporting requirements under the Public Hospitals Act, the physician’s role in disclosure, and the Canadian Patient Safety Institute’s National Guidelines for the Disclosure of Critical Events. In addition, a practical case study will be presented and participants will have the opportunity to discuss the steps involved in meeting the legislative and practice requirements involved with disclosure.
