Hospital Operating Funding Announced

Ontario hospitals will receive an additional $495 million in operating funding this fiscal year, George Smitherman, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, announced this morning. This figure represents a 3.7 per cent increase from last year and brings the total operating funding investment in hospitals to $14.1 billion.

This is a transitional year with respect to the announcement of operating allocations. LHINs assumed responsibility for hospital operations and funding in April and the government has signaled that it expects LHINs will remain committed to the multi-year allocation process and stable, predictable hospital funding in future.

The OHA plans to advocate strongly for the LHINs to continue multi-year funding in the coming months. During my remarks at the allocation announcement, I stressed that point, and the fact that adequate, multi-year funding is absolutely necessary to ensuring that hospitals have the resources they need to provide first-class patient care.

For more information, including individual hospital allocations, please see the attached MOHLTC news release and backgrounder.
