Educating Staff and Engaging Patients in Patient Safety
presented by Ontario Hospital Association
Course name: Educating Staff and Engaging Patients in Patient Safety
Course duration: February 4, 2008
Course code: EP 119

Through the introduction of innovative patient safety programs and practices, health care organizations are increasingly demonstrating their strong commitment to advancing a culture of safety across the system. Building system capacity to sustain this culture of safety requires ongoing and targeted patient safety education for senior leaders, health care providers and patients alike. Enabling health care providers with the skills and knowledge about patient safety is a critical component in building a culture of safety within the system and it is equally important that health care organizations engage and communicate with patients throughout the continuum of care.
Educating staff and engaging patients is a high priority for health care organizations and is supported by national organizations, such as the Canadian Council on Health Services Accreditation (CCHSA) and the Canadian Patient Safety Institute (CPSI). The CCHSA has introduced two Required Organizational Practices (ROPs) requiring organizations to deliver education/training on patient safety to staff and to inform and educate patients about their role in patient safety, while the CPSI has recently released a DVD series entitled “Delivering Patient Safety”. As a comprehensive learning tool, the DVD is specially designed for the Canadian audience and brings together the perspectives of world experts and the experience of health care professionals to identify and remove the causes of error before there is harm to the patient.
This conference is dedicated to the importance of educating staff and engaging patients in patient safety. Participants will have the opportunity to hear from organizations that have made patient safety education and patient engagement a top priority. Segments of the DVD series will also be incorporated into the session.
