Toronto, ON – Today, Ontario’s Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) and the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) released its Hospital Report 2007 series. These reports outline the performance of 122 hospitals in acute care, rehabilitation, complex continuing care and emergency care. A report on mental health care will be released at a later date.
“Hospital Report provides Ontarians with information on the performance of their local hospital,” said Health and Long-Term Care Minister George Smitherman. “The report findings also lead to the sharing of best practices among hospitals, and that benefits all patients across the province.”
First published in 1997, Hospital Report is a joint initiative of the MOHLTC and the OHA. It was developed by the Hospital Report Research Collaborative at the University of Toronto and is now independently prepared by the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI).
“Hospital Report is the trusted gold standard in hospital performance measurement,” said OHA President and CEO Hilary Short. “It was developed by experts for use in Ontario, its methodology is peer-reviewed and its data collection methods are sound. As a result, hospital administrators can confidently use this information to identify successes and implement the strategies that will drive improvements.”
Key findings from the Hospital Report 2007 series include:
- There has been an increase in the number of acute care hospitals in Ontario implementing selected patient safety strategies over the past year.
- An increasing number of hospitals providing emergency care are developing and using standardized care guidelines.
- Over 90% of rehabilitation hospitals are using and sharing their patient satisfaction data with their management team, hospital staff and board committees in order to improve the client-centeredness of their care.
- Over the five year period from 2001-2002 to 2005-2006, the provincial average of chronic complex continuing care patients in daily physical restraints dropped by half (from 29.1% to 14.3%)
“This series of reports has always been an important resource for Ontario hospitals and the communities they serve,” said CIHI President and CEO Glenda Yeates. “To offer patients the very best quality of care, it is necessary to constantly assess and re-evaluate the way services are delivered. The Hospital Report 2007 series presents reliable information to help hospitals make sound decisions and effectively manage their resources.”
