Executive Team 

To support the OHA’s members and the strategic direction of the Board of Directors, day-to-day operations of the association are led by President and CEO Tom Closson and supported by the OHA’s senior management team. In addition to their divisional responsibilities, each senior manager serves as an Executive Lead for each of OHA’s five Regions, providing support and acting as a liaison for regional affairs.

 

Tom Closson, President and CEO

Tom Closson was appointed President and CEO of the Ontario Hospital Association in January 2008. He stepped down from the position of President and Chief Executive Officer of University Health Network (UHN) in 2005 and subsequently practiced as a health care management consultant. Before joining UHN, Tom worked in Victoria BC as President and CEO of the Capital Health Region. Prior to that, he spent nine years at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto and rose from the position of Chief Financial Officer to Chief Operating Officer and ultimately to President and CEO.

Tom obtained previous experience in health care consulting as an owner of Medicus Canada and as a Partner with KPMG. Further, he has extensive government experience including with the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, the Ministry of Community and Social Services and Management Board.

Tom earned an MBA from York University in Toronto and graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Industrial Engineering. He is a Professional Engineer.


Anthony Dale, Vice President, Policy and Public Affairs

Anthony Dale is Vice President of Policy and Public Affairs, a position he has held since January 2006. In this capacity, he leads and manages the staff of the Public Affairs, Policy, Legislative & Legal Affairs, Health Finance & Research and eHealth Strategy units of the organization. Anthony has been with the OHA since 2004 when he was originally appointed Director of Public Affairs.

From 2001 to 2004, Anthony was a consultant at a leading Toronto-based public affairs consulting firm. From 1995 to 2001 he served in senior legislative, policy and communication positions in the Office of the Premier, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, and Minister of Labour for the Government of Ontario.

 

In February 2008, Anthony was appointed by the Government of Canada to a three-year term as a Member of the National Roundtable on the Environment and the Economy. He holds a Master of Public Administration (1995) and Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in political studies (1992), both from Queen's University.


Warren DiClemente, Chief Operating Officer and Vice President, Educational Services

Warren DiClemente currently holds the position of Chief Operating Officer and Vice President, Educational Services. Warren is a seasoned business manager who has integrated both theory and practice of lifelong and professional development in his personal life and career. Warren has a lengthy track record as a leader and entrepreneur, demonstrating expertise building internal teams and external partnerships. With over 36 years at the OHA, Warren has a history of corporate loyalty and a commitment to leadership and excellence.

 

Warren provides leadership and is accountable for the OHA’s Educational Services and Operations division, which has a combined product line that yields approximately $7 million in gross direct revenue, and attendance figures of over 23,000 delegates per year. Key products include:

 

• HealthAchieve, the largest health care show of its kind in North America;
• Conferences and seminars (includes a comprehensive schedule of one and two-day conferences);
• The Governance Centre of Excellence, which provides a broad range of relevant services and educational programs

  including online resources and tools for health care trustees;
• Certificate and diploma courses, leading to the Diploma in Healthcare Management;
• Distance learning (videoconferencing and web-based learning) and regional programs; and
• OHA corporate marketing.

 

As Chair of the OHA’s Operations Committee, Warren is also responsible for the day-to-day internal operations of the OHA, ensuring all programs and initiatives operate effectively and according to the Association’s established business plan.

 

Julie Giraldi, Chief Human Resources and Information Technology Officer

Julie Giraldi currently holds the position of Chief Human Resources (HR) and Information Technology (IT) Officer at the OHA. In this role, Julie oversees both the HR and IT needs of a team of professionals as they provide trusted, expert advice on hospital affairs to the health care community and needed guidance to employees at all levels.

 

Julie joined the OHA in May 2000 as Director, Human Resources and Corporate Services.  Her achievements in these roles include the development of a Strategic Human Resources Plan for the organization in addition to building and sustaining the alignment of staff and corporate goals to encourage a performance-driven culture. With the support of the senior management team, Julie also led the OHA through redefining its organizational culture and structure leading to achieving results of 99 percent staff engagement and thanks to these efforts, the OHA has received the Top 10 Places Where Employees Thrive Award. Most recently, she has played a key leadership role in the re-design and re-development of the OHA’s new website, while still implementing key information systems at the OHA.

 

Previously, Julie was employed at the Toronto Transit Commission - the largest transit agency in Canada and the second largest in North America - where she held a series of progressively more senior leadership positions throughout her 12 years with the organization.

 

Julie holds a degree from the University of Toronto; has completed the Advanced Human Resources Management Program at Rotman School of Management; Queen’s Executive Program; and also has her Senior Human Resources Designation from the Human Resources Professional Association.

 

 Doug Miller, Chief Financial Officer

Doug Miller joined the OHA in January 2001 as Financial Controller. He assumed the current Chief Financial Officer role in March 2004. He provides leadership to OHA senior executive, internal staff, the Board and affiliated organizations in the development, formulation and execution of financial and administrative services, including financial planning, reporting, and investment management.

Prior to joining the OHA, Doug was Controller at Ontario Place for four years, and prior to that held a senior financial role at the Ontario Development Corporation for seven years. He is a designated professional accountant with a career spanning more than 30 years in financial, administration and controllership roles in manufacturing, consumer products, mining, steel and aircraft companies.

He volunteers on the Board of Directors of Big Brothers and Sisters of Ajax Pickering as Treasurer and Chair, Finance and Administration Committee; has served on the Festival of Trees Committee for Rouge Valley Hospital-Ajax/Pickering site; Ajax Pickering United Way; and the John Howard Society of Durham Region. He is currently on the Finance and Audit Committee at Middlesex Hospital Alliance, Strathroy.


Greg Shaw, Vice President, Strategic Human Resources Management

As the Vice President, Strategic Human Resources Management Services of the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA), Greg is responsible for labour relations, organizational health management services as well as strategic human resources planning serving the hospital sector in Ontario. In addition, he is responsible corporately for patient safety, physician issues and clinical best practices as well as issues related to regulated health professions.


Prior to joining the OHA, he was the Vice President Human Resources and Leadership Development with Sunnybrook and Women’s College Health Sciences Centre. A Certified Human Resources Professional and an alumnus of the Ivey School of Business, Greg also worked as a senior executive at both West Park Health Care Centre in Toronto and William Osler Health Centre.

 
He has chaired provincial hospital bargaining teams and has consulted widely in both the hospital and private sector in matters of employee and labour relations, often utilized as a management nominee on both rights and interest arbitration boards. Accountability for laboratories, pharmacy, diagnostic imaging, food services, finance, IT, maintenance, engineering and materials management is also part of his background. He is currently a trustee of the Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan’s Board, a Member of the Board for Booth Centennial Hospital Services, and former chair of the Alzheimer Society of Toronto.
